Southern Maryland Catholic Elementary Schools’ Entry Wins Youth Video Contest To Welcome Pope Benedict XVI
St. John’s School, and the rest of the Southern Maryland Catholic Elementary Schools submitted one of the top three winning videos in an Archdiocese of Washington-sponsored youth video contest. The contest was open to Catholic youth groups of five or more in grades K-12 in the Archdiocese of Washington, Archdiocese of Baltimore and Diocese of Arlington. The groups were invited to create two-minute original videos to welcome the pope to Washington. The other winning entries were St. Rose of Lima “Children Love Christ Choir,” Gaithersburg, MD and Seton School, Manassas, VA. Students in grades K-8 from the 12 Catholic elementary schools in Southern Maryland worked together on their entry, which they turned into a history lesson. Their video focuses on the founding of Catholicism in the English colonies, shooting it at three important Southern Maryland sites - St. Clements Island, St. Mary’s City and Chapel Point in Port Tobacco. Pat Suit, St. John’s Principal, coordinated the filming with the help of other Catholic school principals and solicited help from 7th grade teacher Terri Taylor and her husband, Dave Taylor, to film the video. Each winning group received 15 tickets to the April 17 papal Mass and the opportunity to have their video shown as part of the pre-Mass program at the stadium. Each Southern Maryland school will get one ticket from the winning entry and the remainder will go to the Taylors for their help. The archdiocese received 47 entries for its youth video contest.A panel of eight judges made up of media professionals from the Washington area and archdiocesan officials judged the entries on enthusiasm, creativity and clarity of message.
